US-China Energy Conservation and Environment Protection Forum & Match-making Meeting

On May 20th, 2015, US-China Energy Conservation and Environment Protection Cooperation Forum & Match-making Meeting, which was co-hosted by US-China Energy Cooperation Program (ECP), China Chamber of Commerce for Import & Export of Machinery and Electronic Products (CCCME), Department of Commerce of Jiangsu Province and Jiangsu Council for the Promotion of International Trade, was successfully held at Kunshan Flower Bridge International Expo Center.

Zhang Yujing, the president of CCCME, Jiang Xin, Deputy Director General of Jiangsu Department of Commerce, and Cameron S. Werker, Principal Commercial Consul of U.S. Consulate General Shanghai attended and addressed the forum. Huang Zheng, Vice President of Jiangsu Council for the Promotion of International Trade, Jing Jianhong, Vice Mayor of Kunshan Municipal Government, other relevant leaders from Jiangsu Department of Environment Protection, Suqian Bureau of Environment Protection, Kunshan Bureau of Environment Protection and Chinese environment protection application enterprises attended the forum and match-making meeting. Participants from US and China exceed 170 in total, far more than the expected scale.

Experts from Jiangsu Environmental Sciences Research Academy introduced current situation and demands of Jiangsu Environment Protection industry. GE, Dow, Birtley, AECOM, Jiangsu Zhaosheng Group and China Academy of Machinery Science & Technology discussed issues about solutions and technology regarding water treatment, sludge treatment and atmospheric controlling. 13 US companies, including Honeywell, ThermoFisher, and over 60 Chinese companies, including GreenTech, Sinosteel, Power Construction Corporation of China, participated in the discussion.

As a significant mating activity along with China (Kunshan) Import Expo, the first-convened forum was not only an important activity under US-China states cooperation mechanism framework, but also a new method to promote US-China in-depth communication and cooperation on product trading, technology transfer, and joint research. Besides, attending US enterprises communicated with Liu Jianlin, chief engineer of Jiangsu Department of Environment Protection about environment protection issues under new normal and did match-making with Kunshan Environment Protection Bureau regarding demands and projects.

The highlights of this forum are prominent. Firstly, high-level attending enterprises. 6 out of 11 US companies are Fortune 500 companies. Chinese attending companies are also first-tier enterprises regarding membrane technology in water treatment and sludge treatment. Secondly, strong match attribute. Enterprises of both countries are in the upstream and the downstream of the three sub-industries of desulfurization and denitration, the water treatment, and the sludge treatment. Their strong matching attribute is conducive to carrying out the communication and cooperation. Thirdly, broad coverage. Government agencies, research institutions and enterprises from both US and China sides presented environmental protection policies, technical demands and supplies, pointing out key fields and directions for US-China cooperation. Fourthly, practice and high-efficiency. During the subsequent match-making meeting, US enterprises, such as GE, Dow and Birtley conducted in-depth discussion and communication with over 20 Chinese enterprises such as Nanjing Steel Group, China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation and Suntech. Nanjing Steel Group agreed with GE on arranging site visit in the near future, besides, it wished to set up equity investment partnership with US superior environment protection enterprises. China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation and ECP expressed strong cooperation intention. Suntech and Dow had thorough communication and technical exchange regarding nitrogen problem in water treatment.
